On Thursday, October 13, the State Chancellery launched new stamps and envelopes of international circulation on the occasion of the European Local Democracy Week (ELDW). The event took place within the National Conference on the topic „The role of local government in ensuring Human Rights and Gender Equality at the local level".

The stamp shows a map of the Republic of Moldova, the colors of the country and of the European Union and the text " European Local Democracy Week". The drawing in the left upper part of the envelope has the same symbols and the same text on it. The nominal value of the stamp is of 1.20 MDL.

„Postage stamps, besides the basic purpose of being a means of payment for postage charges, play an important role in the transmission of messages about an event or other. This envelope and stamp, dedicated to the European Local Democracy Week, when sent to our colleagues, friends and acquaintances abroad, conveys our message about this event, but also about the Republic of Moldova", Vadim Cebanu, the director general of S.E. „Poşta Moldovei" (Moldova's Post Office) said. According to Vadim Cebanu, during this week, a special stamp, dedicated to the European Local Democracy Week, will be put on all the exit letters of the central office of the S.E. "Moldova's Post Office" in the municipality of Chisinau.

„Along with the postage stamps and envelopes, the envelops' stamping will also convey worldwide the message about the celebrated event in the Republic of Moldova, about our country, about the local authorities' attempt to be more democratic in transposing ideas and approaching the community citizens", the director of the S.E. "Moldova's Post Office" said.

The first envelopes dedicated to the ELDW were symbolically stamped during the conference by Anatolie Onceanu, the Deputy Secretary General of the Government of the Republic of Moldova, Ingrid Tersman, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden in the Republic of Moldova, Kaarina Immonen,  the UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova, Ulvi Akhundlu, the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Chisinau and Tatiana Badan, the President of the Congress of Local Authorities from Moldova. New custom envelopes and stamps were distributed to all local government and civil society representatives, who attended the conference.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova, Kaarina Immonen, said within the ceremony that the initiative to launch the postage stamp and envelope is a good one as it will help promote Moldova's image and the positive measures undertaken by the local public authorities to promote democracy.

The European Local Democracy Week, celebrated during October 10-16, is an annual event held under the aegis of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, aimed at promoting human rights as a cornerstone of local democracy and developing a culture of observing human rights in all the European local communities. The European Local Democracy Week is organized by the State Chancellery with the support of the development partners - the Government of Sweden, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) - within the Joint Integrated Local Development Programme (JILDP).

The Joint Integrated Local Development Programme supports the Government of the Republic of Moldova in its decentralization efforts and in the process of strengthening local autonomy and aims to ensure equal benefits for the vulnerable groups, including the discriminated, socially excluded and marginalized groups, as a result of decentralization and local development.
