Mayors of 12 communities in Moldova went on a study tour to Poland between July 19-24, 2015, where they studied the successful practices in local economic development. The visit was organized by the Joint Integrated Local Development Program (JILDP).

The mayors visited eight communes and smaller and larger towns in the region of Lublin, Poland. There they visited various types of businesses, such as craft workshop, fruit drying facility, horse breeding farm, green energy use areas, waste sorting plant, culture houses that also serve as community centers, scientific technological parks and business incubators.

„The agenda has been designed so as to allow mayors to understand new methods and tools for stimulating local business, attracting investments, fostering start-ups and building lasting relationships with businesses”, says Zinaida Adam, JILDP consultant on local government institutional capacity building.

The mayor of Chiscareni village, Sangerei rayon, Silvia Turcanu, says: „Until now I vaguely imagined the economic development of Chiscareni village, but now I have very good examples that I want to transpose into life with the whole team and the community town hall. I understand now how an area with not so many industrial opportunities can be developed, and how the rural tourism should be properly harnessed.”

The study visit to Poland is part of the capacity building component for 30 LPA I working with the joint local integrated development program.

The Joint Integrated Local Development Programme (JILDP) is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), with financial support from the Government of Denmark and Sweden.
