More than 50 families of Ruseni village, Edinet district, got access to drinking water thanks to a community development project, implemented by the villagers with the support of the Joint Integrated Local Development Project.

„Water means life. Now, when we have tap water, we can say that we live", the villagers stated at the launching of the renewed water supply system. Ruseni village has four artesian wells, but none of them, as well as the aqueduct, has not been functioning for many years. Before having the centralized access to water, the villagers were able to use only the water from the wells. "The wells are very deep and the consumption of the water taken out from them is contraindicated. For this reason, we insisted on bringing drinking water in the village and we asked for donors' support. We wouldn't have managed to solve this problem by ourselves", Tatiana Rusanvschi, the Mayor of Ruseni, mentioned.

With the assistance of the Joint Integrated Local Development Project (JILDP), a segment of local aqueduct and an artesian well were renewed, thus giving access to drinking water to a part of village where almost 50 families live. "We focused our attention on that part of the village where the percentage of vulnerable population is higher. At the moment, the villagers left without water will agree with the inhabitants that live in the zone supplied by the renewed artesian well and thus will also be able to have access to drinking water until the whole system is renewed", the Mayor of Ruseni said.

According to Olesea Cruc, Manager within the JILDP, Ruseni locality is one of those 100 target localities selected according to the vulnerability criterion based on the indices of deprivation for small areas. Besides technical and financial assistance for the implementation of this Project, Ruseni, similar to other localities, has also enjoyed the assistance of JILDP in the process of community mobilization in order to empower vulnerable groups and to develop the strategy of socio-economic development based on human rights and gender equality approach. "This approach implies the participation of all community members in the process of identification of local priorities and in ensuring equal benefits to all community members and vulnerable groups as a result of local development", Olesea Cruc added.

Joint Integrated Local Development Programme is implemented by the Government of Moldova with the assistance the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), with the financial support of the Government of Sweden. Programme aims to yield equal benefits of decentralization and local development on the vulnerable groups.
